about

Remixed, remastered and renamed, this was the demo of our entry to the RNZ Christmas song competition back in 2018.

Set in my home town CHCH I wanted to make the Xmas message of 'peace and goodwill to all' meaningful, after the devastation caused by the Mosque shootings. Seems fitting to re-release this now, at a time when the political environment in NZ seems set to divide us.

Unfortunately I couldn't salvage Karen Apperley's brilliant drum performance. Our demo recording technology just didn't do it justice. So it's "AI off we go" as far as drums.

lyrics

The echoes of Otautahi take you to Christmas
And love’s at the top of your list again
Look where you’re standing and look who is standing beside you
Nga mihinui as salam alaikum

They tore down the year and rebuilt it in somebody’s image
December is here and it’s hot again
Look where you’re standing and look who is standing beside you
Something is born now. The gravity’s warmer down here.

Hurry up now there is peace in the air can you feel it?
This is the town I grew up in
52 Christmases clear line of sight to my childhood
Something is born now. December is here and it’s warm.
